การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาเปรียบเทียบกฎหมายเกี่ยวกับการคุ้มครองสิ่งบ่งชี้ทางภูมิศาสตร์ของประเทศไทย กรณีปัญหาการระบุชื่อสิ่งบ่งชี้ทางภูมิศาสตร์ของไก่พื้นเมืองไทย และเพื่อเสนอแนวทางแก้ไขปรับปรุงกฎหมายเกี่ยวกับการคุ้มครองสิ่งบ่งชี้ทางภูมิศาสตร์ของประเทศไทยในการคุ้มครองผลประโยชน์ทางการค้าของไก่พื้นเมืองไทยในฐานะสิ่งบ่งชี้ทางภูมิศาสตร์ การวิจัยนี้ใช้ระเบียบวิธีวิจัยเชิงบรรยาย โดยศึกษาและวิเคราะห์รวบรวมข้อมูลจากเอกสารที่เกี่ยวข้อง โดยนามาวิเคราะห์กับกฎหมายและระเบียบข้อบังคับ เพื่อให้ได้มาซึ่งข้อสรุปทางกฎหมายและแนวทางแก้ไข ผลการวิจัยพบว่าไก่พื้นเมืองไทยพันธุ์ดั้งเดิมจานวนสี่สายพันธุ์ มีการคัดเลือกและปรับปรุงพันธุ์เพื่อให้ได้พันธุ์แท้ โดยมีการใช้ชื่อภูมิศาสตร์ของศูนย์เครือข่ายวิจัยและพัฒนาด้านการปรับปรุงพันธุ์สัตว์ประกอบเข้ากับชื่อไก่พื้นเมืองไทยพันธุ์แท้ทั้งสี่สายพันธุ์ โดยต่อมามีการส่งเสริมการเลี้ยงไก่พื้นเมืองทั้งสี่สายพันธุ์กระจายไปทั่วทุกภูมิภาคของประเทศไทย ทั้งนี้พบประเด็นปัญหาทางกฎหมายคุ้มครองสิ่งบ่งชี้ทางภูมิศาสตร์ของประเทศไทย ได้แก่ ปัญหาการระบุชื่อสิ่งบ่งชี้ทางภูมิศาสตร์ของไก่พื้นเมืองไทย จึงมีข้อเสนอแนะให้แก้ไขเพิ่มเติมกฎหมายและระเบียบข้อบังคับ อาทิเช่น ควรกาหนดหลักเกณฑ์ว่าด้วยลักษณะของผลิตภัณฑ์ไก่พื้นเมืองที่จะได้รับความคุ้มครองสิ่งบ่งชี้ทางภูมิศาสตร์เพื่อใช้เป็นมาตรฐานภายในประเทศและระหว่างประเทศ ให้มีการพิสูจน์เอกลักษณ์เฉพาะที่เชื่อมโยงโดยตรงอย่างมีนัยสาคัญกับพื้นที่ทางภูมิศาสตร์ที่เป็นแหล่งกาเนิด
