Nakhon Sawan Field Crops Research Center,
The objective of this study was to select the inbred line generation S7 having high yield
and drought tolerance using smith’s selection index. Two hundred inbred line from generation S7 was
compared under water stress during the flowering stage compared with normal condition
(well-watered) at Nakhon Sawan Field Crops Research Center during the dry season (November 2021 –
March 2022). The results showed grain yield under normal c o n d i t i o n s (well-watered)
average o f 330 kg/rai and grain yield under water stress during t h e flowering stage average o f
212 kg/rai. Grain yield is a positive correlation with drought index and the number of ears per
plant negatively c o r r e l a t e d with leaf senescence, leaf rolling, a n d anthesis-silking
interval. Smith’s selection index u s e s 6 traits i n c l u d i n g grain yield and correlation
traits and set their economic weight as 1, 1, 1, -1, -1 and -1 respectively. The results able to
select 20 inbred lines having grain yield average o f 487 kg/rai drought Index average 1.04 number
of ear per plant average of 1 ear/plant leaf senescence average 3 leaf rolling average 2
anthesis-silking interval average 0 day which is consistent with the goal of selection inbred line
high yield under water stress during the flowering stage low leaf senescence low leaf rolling and
nearby anthesis-silking
interval.
